When the client approached us for this project, they had recently completed a beautiful interior renovation, which meant it was time for the outside to catch up.
With teenagers, pets, and a full calendar of social gatherings, this active family needed more than a pretty backyard. They wanted a space that worked hard, looked great, and made entertaining effortless.
Their wishlist was ambitious: a large, rainproof pergola, a seamless indoor-outdoor connection, and enough space to lounge, dine, soak, and relax—all built with durable, low-maintenance materials that would last years without constant upkeep.

Navigating an Evolving Design
The original layout for this space placed the hot tub front and centre, blocking sightlines and breaking up the space. By relocating it under the kitchen’s bay windows, we opened up the entire main patio and created a more inviting view from inside the home. It was a small change that made a big impact on the feel and flow of the space.
The pergola design also evolved, requiring precise engineering to wrap around architectural features and deliver the full coverage the family wanted. Every adjustment was made with the client’s lifestyle in mind—maximizing usability, minimizing clutter, and improving movement across the space.

Materials That Make Sense
In a backyard designed for real life, every material matters. We used composite decking for long-term durability, artificial grass to eliminate lawn maintenance, and natural stone features—including a basalt retaining wall—to ground the space with warmth and texture.
Initially, the family had hoped for natural grass for their kids to play on, but switching to artificial turf became one of their favourite decisions. It saved time, reduced stress, and held up perfectly under busy feet and muddy paws.
The Value of Functional Design
This project is a standout example of value-driven design that doesn’t compromise quality or beauty. It’s a fully functional, low-maintenance outdoor space that offers year-round comfort, connection, and calm.
It’s become a true extension of the home that sees daily use, not just on special occasions. From a cluttered blank slate to a clean, modern retreat, this transformation reflects what we do best: building with purpose, adapting with care, and designing spaces that improve everyday living.

"I owe my backyard to them. I have a family of 5, and a functional backyard means a lot to us. This was a smallish job for Hyland, but they helped me out, and I immediately knew I was in good hands. The workers were friendly, on time and very professional. The work was done quickly and with care. They addressed all my concerns and made fast changes as needed."
